HEALTH TIPS OF THE WEEK

On October - 1 - 2010 1 COMMENT

FOUND IN A RECENT POLL, JUST BY SAYING “HI” TO A FAVORITE COWORKER YOU CAN FEEL SEVEN TIMES HAPPIER THAN FOLKS WHO DON’T!  ALSO BEING FRIENDS WITH A COWORKER MAKES YOUR DAY MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE.  WHY NOT START TODAY SAYING HELLO TO OTHERS AT WORK?  YOU JUST MIGHT FEEL THE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR MOOD!  IT ALSO HELPS TO MAKE EYE CONTACT BECAUSE EYE CONTACT INSTANTLY STIMULATES A RUSH OF THE HORMONE OXYTOCIN,  WHICH MAKES YOU FEEL CLOSER TO PEOPLE!  LET’S PUT OUR BEST FOOT FORWARD AND MAKE A MORE JOYFUL DAY FOR OURSELVES AND OUR COLLEAGUES!

I read in the newspaper today about parents who are trying to teach responsibile drinking by letting their teenagers have alcohol at home. But in a recent study of 428 families, researchers found that the more teenagers were allowed to drink at home, the more they drank outside of home as well. What’s more it stated that teens who drank under their parent’s watch or on their own had an elevated risk of developing alcohol-related problems….

NOW… COGEE’S THOUGHTS ON THIS…..read below…

You know, it’s sad to me to see kids smoking weed and drinking with with their dads and/or moms-and having fun doing it as a family. The parent is enjoying it just as much as the kid! To me, that’s disrespectful on both ends! I’m from that old school thinking of ‘you don’t do that with your parent and really not with the kid.’ Come on! How smart is that!? You’re setting your kid up to fail, because when the drinking becomes a problem later on, and that cool thang ya’ll were doing all of a sudden goes bad and the parent blames the kid, saying,”You know better!” Wow. You can’t be serious! If you, the parent, allowed the behavior in the home, what do you expect? I was taught that if you teach anything in the home that’s how you live outside the home, so if you allow your kid to drink, smoke cigarettes, weed, meth, cocain, (the list goes on), how can you not be a part of the blame of your kids’ downfall? You know what else is sad, when parents say, “I didn’t know” or “I had no idea.” Yeah right! You opened this can of bad habits by allowing this behavior at a young age, and now it’s cost your family everything if your child kills a family in a drunk driving accident. Now, don’t get me wrong, though, kids should have a self control-option also. But if you can do anything to the max with your parents-what makes parents think their kids won’t max out-in public at parties or with friends, or destroy their mate down the road-or their own kids lives with that pattern of lack of respect. This behavior is not allowed in my home, nor do I allow my kids to hang with kids that have the greenlight to do all with parents. See to me, the parent has to have a bond with the other parent-before their kids hang out at a young age. You got to know what kind of home these kids come from. That’s important to your household. My son, trust this, would not smoke weed or drink in front of me because he knows how I feel about that and I dont drink or smoke. So with that, I don’t promote bad thoughts or him following my life style, and so far I’m proud of him for that. Now when something goes down, hopefully not, I really can say I didn’t know or I didn’t raise him like that. When your kids are grown they live off of what they were taught and how they were brought up. As a kid you never forget those moments or that time in life that changed you. Now, I’m not saying don’t be in your kids business, I’m saying talk to your kids and let them know there’s a price to pay for this lifestyle down the road! But the thing that hurts me the most is your kid’s spouse or their kids are at stake with these bad habits. Come on parents, THINK! I know families now where the kids can curse, drink, have boyfriends and girlfriends stay all night and the parents are cool with this behavior. The kids I know that drink with their parents, they need that drink to function. I see this pattern in the parent and how the kids have no respect for the parent and the parent has no respect for the kids. It’s sad! When I was young, my uncle would shoot cocain in front of me and say,” Boy don’t you ever do this!” Now, when I look back on that, I say man, I didn’t have a chance if I was a weak minded child, and if I didn’t have a strong father figure in my life to talk to. My parents would have killed me and my brothers and sisters if we drank or smoked around them. Thank God! For my sake, those bad habits don’t follow me in this life. As parents we all need to lead by example and stand for something good or even if you’re a bad parent and made a lot of bad mistakes in life, tell your kids not to be like you! And give them examples of your life, other family members with the same problem and the outcome that came from that situation. Pray about your advice and ask God to give you the words to give a good example to your kids why this would be a losing battle down the road. Give them hope for their future!

God Bless,
COGEE

Food Won’t Take Me Out

On November - 24 - 2009 2 COMMENTS

Hello today everybody and many blessings to you all.  I really want you all to be careful eating this holiday.  Especially my black folks that are having soul food Thanksgiving dinners.

Make sure to check out this article by Djehuty Ma’at-Ra.   Read it and take from it what is good for you and your family and pass on the knowledge of health.  In this article she says that “…Black people (Black Americans) are by far the most obese people on the planet! Especially African-American women! It’s epidemic!  Black Americans are sick for many reasons, but especially for reasons pertaining to diet (what they eat!) They don’t know what to eat! They don’t know to eat foods based upon or in alignment with their bio-genetic makeup…”

Through my own bad eating habits at one time, I fell victim to bad health. Now I’m getting it right and more in shape. Getting sexy for you all! Cause I got BIG things planned for this next year! And I have to be an example of my own words of wisdom.  So hold me to this and help me too! As I pass the help to you all.  If you ever invite me to dinner, please don’t cook anything that’ll disrespect my eating habits or that will kill me. Good Health comes first!

I’m writing this because I love and care about you all-not only black folks, but people of all colors. I’m really trying to bring awareness to every race because the more we die of poor health there is a lot of young kids left in this world alone with lack of knowledge. And we don’t have to learn a lesson by going through a tragedy.  Life is about multiplying not subtracting from poor decisions.

So Happy Holidays. Much love to you! And be on the lookout for my show about health and awareness with fitness trainer Barry Gordon.

Coming to you Soon!

“COGEE”

I’m out!
