STREET PLAYAZ

ONCE IN A WHILE THERE COMES A RAPPER OR RAP GROUP THAT MAKES A MARK ON THE INDUSTRY WITH FUNKY BEATS, GREAT LYRICS AND A HOT CONCEPT TO ADD TO THE GAME.
THIS GROUP IS CALLED “STREET PLAYAZ”. IT’S MADE UP OF THREE MEMBERS. BABY PUN-WHO IS A HOT MC ON THE MIC COMING WITH FIERY LYRICS. HIS NAME COMES FROM THE LADIES CALLING HIM THAT BECAUSE OF HIS SIZE, AS THEY DO WITH FOR EXAMPLE, RICK ROSS-FAT JOE-BIG PUN-BIGGIE-BONE CRUSHER-CHUBB ROCK-HEAVY D-FAT BOYS-THE LIST GOES ON. BUT TO BE CLEAR, IN NO WAY DOES HE FEEL HIS NAME MOCKS BIG PUN’S NAME OR THAT HE IS A CLOWN. IT’S COOL WHEN THE LADIES GIVE YOU A NAME OF ONE OF THE BEST MC’S OF ALL TIME IN THE GAME. I THINK HE WILL REP HIS IMAGE VERY WELL AND INSPIRE MORE BIG MC’S TO COME WITH IT AND STAND FOR SOMETHING! HE’S DEFINITELY ONE TO BET ON! BABY PUN’S GRINDIN HARD AND PUSHIN TO BE GREAT IN THIS LIFE BECAUSE HIS FATHER WAS A POLICE OFFICER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY. HIM AND HIS FAMILY HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING EVER SINCE BECAUSE THEY RECEIVED VERY LITTLE HELP FROM THE DEATH OF HIS FATHER. SO THIS IS BABY PUN’S WAY TO GIVE BACK TO HIS FAMILY AND MAKE THINGS RIGHT FOR THEM!
THE FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE GROUP IS SIDESHOW YOSHI. MEANING YOU’RE GOING TO GET A HELL OF A SHOW NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES. I AM PROUD OF THE BROTHER WHO HAD IT VERY HARD GROWING UP, ALSO HAVING HIS FATHER MURDERED AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE, DEVASTATING HIM AND HIS FAMILY. BEING AN ONLY CHILD MADE IT EVEN HARDER WITH NO ONE TO SHARE HIS PAIN WITH, BUT HE SAID THAT’S WHERE MUSIC SAVED HIS LIFE AND GAVE HIM NEW PURPOSE. ALSO MUSIC IS A WAY FOR HIM TO REP HIS DADDY’S NAME. HIS FATHER WAS THE FOUNDER OF A CAR CLUB CALLED “THE STREET PLAYERS” A LOCAL CAR CLUB IN LAS VEGAS. YOSHI HAS A PLAN TO BRING GOOD MUSIC, FUN AND PEACE TO THE STREETS AND CAR CLUBS. WE REP THE STREETS AND ALL IT STANDS FOR BECAUSE GOOD THINGS COME FROM THE STREETS, NOT ONLY THE BAD! WE ARE GOING TO SHOCK THE WORLD AND OUR FANS AND THE GAME ITSELF! TIME AND BLESSINGS WILL TELL OUR STORY!
THE NEXT MEMBER OF THE GROUP IS THE HYPE MAN, VILLE, WHO IS VERY HYPE AND CARRIES THE GROUP’S ENERGY, ALONG WITH HIS SMOOTHNESS AND ‘LADY SAVVY’! VILLE SHARES THE DEVASTATION AND PRESSURE OF LOSING HIS FATHER TOO, AT THE HANDS OF SOMEONE ELSE. THE HOSPITAL WHERE PEOPLE GO TO GET BETTER, KEPT CHANGING HIS MEDICINES AND HIS BODY COULDN’T TAKE IT. INSTEAD OF GETTING BETTER, HE NEVER CAME HOME. THERE IS A LAWSUIT PENDING BUT LIKE VILLE HAS STATED, MONEY CAN NEVER ERASE THE PAIN OF LOSING YOUR FATHER. ALL THREE OF THE MEMBERS SHARE THIS PAIN THAT DRIVES THEM TO BE GREAT IN THE GAME. THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME GOALS AND FOCUS TO PUSH TO THE TOP! WHEN ASKED ABOUT HIS ROLE HE SAID, “I’M A PUZZLE PIECE TO A GOOD, BLESSED SITUATION. I’M HONORED TO BE ASKED TO RUN THE BALL FOR THIS TEAM OF GO-GETTERS! I’M THE ENERGY OF THE SHOW AND THEY ARE THE MASTERS OF THIS CRAFT. WE ALL BRING STREET PLAYAZ TO LIFE!! WE OF THE STREETS, THAT REP THE STREETS, COMING TO A CITY NEAR YOU……. COME PLAY WITH A PLAYA!”

When going to a Tech N9ne show, I heard you didn’t know what to expect!  I heard fans saying it was “A must see!  A don’t-miss-it kind of concert!”  One thing I have learned in life, never go on anybody’s word if you truly want to know. Truth: Find out for yourself. I did just that -to review it for my show on my ConversationsWithCogee.com concert review page.

Now the story moves on. So I went to the meet and greet where Tech and his crew were full of smiles and hugs for their fans, taking plenty of photos and signing as much stuff as their fans asked of them. Everybody was just amazed to be there around one of the best M.C.’s in the game as well as his crew. Krizz Kalico, who’s also a beast on the mic, was very cool with his fans and they loved him back. Everybody involved with the show was a joy to meet.  Fans had good things to say as they left the meet and greet – carrying their cd or dvd, autographed gifts and saying that the concert is going to be the bomb. I was like ok, “This is gonna be a must see!” So I went over to Tech N9ne and his crew.  Tech was a down brother, full of jokes, enjoying himself, and happy to be surrounded with much love from his fans and his crew.   We talked and he introduced me to a person, no names used so they don’t get targeted through this review.  This person was very professional for Tech N9ne in handling the time and place set for the meeting spot and for the concert interview.  As I left the meet and greet, I was wondering how this concert would be, and what kind of people would be there. But one thing I knew – it was gonna be hype!

CONCERT TIME

When me and my homeboy got to the House of Blues it was crazy.  Everybody was in both lines, buying t-shirts and paying to get in.  All kinds of honeys were there and with that the guys followed.  I saw that these fans were ready to yell the roof off and see a real show – something rare in the game nowadays.  There are no good concerts lately, like the old days’ real entertainers. Just bands that play music, ya know?

As we went into the concert, the crowd was thick and hard to move through.  I made my way to my meeting spot, made a phone call to one of Tech’s people, he came to get us and we went into the dressing room to chill with the crew.  They all were very cool, respectful and hyped to “bring it” on stage for a hyped cheering crowd outside dancing to the DJ music.  Tech comes into the dressing room, giving love and clowning with his crew to get his face art done for stage.  One of his boys said, “He’s getting his makeup done!” and Tech said, “Hold on Homey! This is not make-up! It’s face paint!” They laughed, clowning.  Krizz Kalico came in, low-key, real cool, showing love but focused on the show.  As Tech introduced me and my homeboy to all his crew, a guy came in to say “Ten minutes Tech, til showtime!”  Tech was carrying himself like a star, with class, as well as his crew, and getting hyped to throw down for their fans.  Tech calls out prayer time, and everybody came in the huddle.  Me and my boy stood to the side, but Tech said, “Yo! Come on in this prayer!  We pray around here!” Well, we love God also so we joined the prayer circle.  Then Tech’s manager told me to come with him.  He took me to the sound booth -a good spot to see the show, a damn good spot!

The lights went out and the crowd lost it!  They were cheering loud and jumping up and down.  Tech came out in his king crown.  As he came in sight of the crowd, they went more crazy, cheering loud as hell, rocking the House of Blues’ roof off.  It was a great intro.  Tech N9ne walks to the front of the stage, smiling, showing love, and feeling the moment along with his fans.  He started his song, flowing.  Then Krizz Kalico came out, busting it down, flowing.  The crowd loved him also.  All of their fans were rocking hard as they killed the first song, giving the crowd all they came for.  The tag team rapping-two-some makes it look so easy.  It’s a lot of work doing God’s work through music.

Another part of the crew came out to combine his talents to a great concert. Kutt Calhoun and Tech held back no punches, rocking the crowd harder with each song and with high energy.  The crowd sang and rocked word for word, showing that they bought the cd/album and played it nonstop.

Then Tech N9ne goes into new songs while telling the crowd, “Let’s take it higher!” He did a good job controlling the crowd and showing why he’s a star who can’t be hidden or dimmed out.  Tech went into his next song ‘Psycho Chic’ on stage by himself.  The stage lights made it even more of a hot show.  Tech rapped with speed, flowing, and the crowd went nuts. He is a true entertainer.  Kaliko came out rapping just as fast. They flowed again taking the concert higher and higher. True M.C.’s!  They went into the song ‘Welcome to The Midwest’- a crowd banger!  Then straight into ‘Bout to Bubble.’  The crowd was singing loud.  Next song, Calhoun came out to join in again.  All three of them controlled the crowd with funky beats and hooks. The crowd was cheering louder.

The next song was called ‘Play My Music Like I Died.’  It was more laid back and smooth, yet hyped, bumping loud and on point. The light show was killing it!  As the lights dimmed to dark red, Tech brought out a surprise to the stage.  I’m not going to say anymore on this-with that set. It’s a must see. You will talk about this for days.  Then, Brotha Lynch Hung and his crew came to the stage bringing West Coast flows. The crowd loved him also, cheering and singing his songs as Tech took a break getting ready to give the crowd more.  Big Scoob came out supporting his boys, pumping his fist, hyping the crowd with his movements.  Then Brotha Lynch slowed it down to pay respect to his mom and sister with ‘R.I.P.’ -a sad moment telling how his sister got murdered. His song had heartfelt words about his life and his pain. The crowd had lighters up and arms moving side to side, sharing his pain.  Then he went into a good song, a funny one called ‘Sit in the Corner Bitch.’ The crowd was singing loud. They really loved that song! And enjoy acting it out, looking to each other, singing more and more.  The next song ‘Get Ya Walk On’ had good beats and he flowed to this well. A good set!

Then Tech N9ne came back on stage to join Brotha Lynch and other Strange Music family members. They all rocked hard as hell giving the crowd all they came for and then some, timing on point. Good team work. The stage show was high energy, beats banging, loud and hard.  Big Scoob came out again doing his thang, shirt off, chains hanging, the crowd loving him, as Tech N9ne showed love for his member as his hype man and showing he’s grounded as an artist to let his crew shine and support their rise.

The next song was called ‘Let’s Get Fucked up.’ The family band of brothers rocked the stage -Tech N9ne, Krizz Kaliko, Big Scoob, CalHoun, again, timing on point and stage rocking hard.  The crowd still feeling good to be at a real concert.  They moved the crowd with “Salute”-a good song they love to sing!

Next, Tech asked “Who wants to get fucked up tonight?” and then asked the crowd what his favorite drink was. They screamed, “CaraBou Lou!” He hollas, “Hell Ya!”  Tech, Kaliko, and Calhoun clown on stage about his favorite drink and then they perform it. The crowd sings louder than Tech N9ne. It’s surely a drinking song. Good party song. Then Kaliko does a song moving the crowd, still keeping the mood strong.  Very skillful.  Flowing. Done a good job!

Tech N9ne comes out and tells the crowd, “This is for you” as he sits in a chair and performs. The crowd sings along flowing to hot, cool stage lights, beat banging, yeah, I liked this one!  His heart was in this one for his fans. He’s a great show man as he got on his knees asking God to forgive him for his actions on the road and ended it showing love to the crowd.

Next song, Tech N9ne does is a personal one to the hatin’ in the game and how others try to hold you down and not show love.  This song is blowin’ em all away and Tech lets his heart out on this one breaking down what happened all through this song and why nobody’s going to stop him from winning big in this game. Good song!

Next song, Tech and Kalico together.  The lights dimmed down…good colors…purple lights darken….real good set!  They done a good job on this one also. End of song, Tech N9ne expressed his love for his God-given job and calls it a blessing from God!  The crowd cheers him on louder, loving him for his blessing.

This was a hell of a concert. The crowd didn’t want to leave yet!

Then Tech N9ne, Calhoun, and Krizz Kaliko go into next song, a banger, to haters, or just negativeness in the world. This song is called ‘Leave Me Alone’ and you can tell he meant every word of this!  His crew flowed hard on this. Tech N9ne loves his fans and tells them how him and his Strange Music family are going to keep rocking 10 more years!  Kaliko tells the crowd to party with them as the whole crew came out on stage, singing ‘I’m a Playa.’  As a man, it was so cool to see a crew with so much love and a good leader that wants everybody to win.

Tech N9ne flowed on ‘I’m a Playa.’ The whole crew done good with their side to side dance, having a ball, clowning on stage and when Tech told crowd to jump, they tried to jump out of the building as he ended the song! At the end of the song, Kaliko shouts out to fans and bigs up his crew as they walk off stage to background song, ‘When You’re Strange’ with the crowd cheering louder and louder!  Then they turned the lights on.

Me and my homeboy went backstage to talk to Tech and his crew!  They had big, nicely wrapped tour buses in back of  the House of Blues. We hung out and talked and alot of fans and workers hung out.  It was cool and laid back, no wild stuff as you would think, just chill!

Tech came off his bus, well, we all came off his bus to talk and he was very humble and real, ready for anything  I was going to ask him, “Ask me any question, I’ll tell no lie!” and he meant it!

“What’s the state of hip hop?” I asked.  Tech said to me, “This game is bringing all color together and it’s paying our bills, and we’re rocking as #1 family!

“What would you like to say to your people, black folk, or the public?”  He said, ” You should get to know me and my struggle and learn from me. Feel my pain and know my whole story!”

Then I asked him advice to give to new artists in the game. Tech’s answer, ” You’re lucky to have the internet nowadays so take advantage of its technology.”

I asked him about road life.  Tech N9ne: “Hard as hell-missing my kids.”

I wanted to know about his mom’s story and his eyes teared up.  It’s a very touching story, but too long to tell. But listen to his song, ‘Show me a God’, and really listen.  It’s a touching story.  God Bless his family and his mom!

So over all, this was one of the best concerts!  Full of energy and good times, partying hard and loud!  At the end of the night you will leave a fan and wanting more good music.  But talking to him in person you feel like you have a friend for life. Now the ball’s in your court. A must see concert in a town near you! What’s up mugs!  Thanks to Tech N9ne and The Strange Music crew for this interview and a-hell-of-an-experience!!!
